One of the most common complaints among homeowner’s associations and property management companies is dog poop! I think it’s just behind the HOA fees that are paid to keep your community looking fresh. Nearly half the population owns a dog, and with those dogs comes… poop. Lots of it. There’s no avoiding it. How can we help with that problem? If you haven’t read Part One, Pet Waste Stations and your Community, I suggest you read that first.
Every pet station has a dog poop bag dispenser, that’s the whole purpose of them. But what kind of bags? Biodegradable? Compostable? Rolled bags? Flat packs? First, let’s get one thing clear, just about every bag on the market is biodegradable, but due to our lovely government (in the U.S.) manufacturers are not always allowed to say it. The bags have to be tested in every environment and conditions, and that’s just not feasible for most manufacturers. Compostable? Puuulease. Do you really want dog poop with all the contaminants and parasites in your compost pile? Not.
The Most Common Dog Poop Bag
Let’s get to the meat here. Rolled bags are the most economical way to go. Some come in rolls of 200 and others come in rolls of 300. The thickness is measured in microns, the higher the number the thicker the bags. 15 microns and thicker are sufficient for good hand protection. Getting rolls of 300 bags means less time spent on refilling them. I suggest the Bark+ brand bags that you can purchase here. Of course, there are several options when it comes to dog poop bags.
Flat packs or Single Pull bags are a convenient way to be able to grab one bag at a time. We like the generic One Pul bags here as they have a strap across the front side of the bag that allows you to pull out a bag quickly without having to lick your fingers. Shown in the picture. Many communities we work with use this type of bag because of the convenience of grabbing one bag at a time. They are a little pricier that the rolled counterparts, but not by much.
Tissue style bags are exactly like it says, they come out like a box of tissues. When you pull one out, another follows and is ready for the next person to grab a poop bag. Just like a box of tissues. These are for the DoggieWalk style dispenser seen here. These bags are the most expensive, however, there is a generic replacement at about half the price.
